Our story

The violinist who plays on giant waves

Nuno Santos has spent a lifetime between two stages: the concert hall and the Atlantic. A professional violinist and professor of sports science, he was among the first to surf Nazaré's giants — towed in by Garrett McNamara — and today he's the safety driver pulling the world's best surfers into the biggest waves on Earth.

CNN filmed him playing the violin on a giant wave. Fodor's asked if he might be the most interesting man in Portugal. We think the more interesting question is what the ocean sounds like — and he'd rather show you in person.

Questions, answered

Before you ask

Do I need to be able to swim?

For the e-foil, basic swimming skills are required — you'll fall in, that's half the fun. On sailing trips everyone wears a lifejacket, so non-swimmers and small children are welcome aboard.

Can children join?

Absolutely — that's our speciality. Children sail with us from age 4 and are invited to trim sails and take the helm. E-foil lessons start at age 12, the Big Wave experience at 16.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

The skipper makes a go/no-go call the evening before and again in the morning. If we cancel, you choose: a new date or a full refund, including the deposit. The ocean decides — you never lose.

I get seasick easily. Is this for me?

The bay of São Martinho is a nearly closed shell of calm water — most guests don't notice any swell at all. Tell us when booking and we'll keep your trip inside the bay.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a light jacket for the evening. We provide everything else: wetsuits, lifejackets, equipment and dry bags for your phone.

Which languages do you speak?

English and Portuguese; Spanish and a little French work fine too. Music, of course, needs no translation.

Can we book the whole boat?

Yes — every group experience has a private option. Choose "Make it private" during booking or message us on WhatsApp for a custom plan.

Where exactly do we meet?

At the small marina of São Martinho do Porto, a two-minute walk from the town center. You'll get the exact pin and parking tips with your booking confirmation.
